National Public Radio this morning had a story on presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton’s proposal that the gas tax be temporarily removed so that Americans can continue filling up their cars to get to and from work each day, and have the time to focus on other things that are important in their lives and require their hard-earned cash, things like home-mortgages and food for their families.

However that gives humans a lot of credit that we simply don’t deserve. If a gas tax is relaxed, what are the odds that people are going to drive more, thereby increasing demand and thus raising prices once again? That’s right, they’re pretty high. We’ve created a world that is dependent on cars and that can no longer be traversed on food or bicycle. The great country that we developed and constructed upon, is now seemingly sink back upon us, and we have done nothing to protect ourselves against it.

Please readers, do yourselves a favor and take a walk today. See how far you can go before you run into a highway or even just a street with a stream of cars parading through it. Do everything you can to remind yourself of the importance of nature. If you eat organic then you can understand the importance of keeping our land as clean as possible, and if you are reading this blog then surely you want to at least keep your own body clean by eating organic.

It is clear that there is not much we can do about needing to travel long distances to see our families, family is important and a key aspect of being human. Still, take in the small things you can do everyday to try to lessen our dependence on oil, to lessen the pollutants that destroy our environment, and our skin and our lungs. If you can, ride your bike to the grocery store. Or, at the very least, carpool with your neighbor and get both your shopping done using only one car.

Small steps. Because we have to do something, and soon.
