Food Miles - Interesting Concept
A new coin has been termed - going along with the ideas of vegatarians - people who eat only vegetables - there has long been pescavegetarians - those who eat only vegetables…with fish, and even lacto-ovo vegetarians who do not eat meat but do eat dairy products including cheese and milk. Now, there has been a new term created - locavore.
Locavores eat only foods that are locally-grown, and it may have come time that this is the best way to exist in the world. As organicconsumers.org reports, “red meat and dairy are responsible for nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions from food for an average U.S. household” so there may be something to be said for eating only those meats and dairy products that did not have to travel - aside from walking perhaps, in the most ideal of cases - from their growth locale to their slaughter locale to your table.
