One of America?s largest consumer-owned food cooperatives, The Wedge Co-Op, announced this past Monday, October 8 that it had agreed to buy Gardens of Eagen which is a 100-acre, certified-organic farm in Farmington, Minnesota. The Minnesota farm will be taken into The Wedge Co-Op’s possession for a cool $1.5 million and it will be an interesting case indeed to watch The Wedge Co-Op suddenly and eagerly enter the farming business. The Wedge, which is based in Minneapolis, is a natural and organic food cooperative that has more than 13,000  member-owners and, for the fiscal year ending on September 30, it posted sales of $37 million! Not too shabby, and definitely proving that organic foods and co-ops may be a very lucrative part of the future!
Around for 33 years, The Wedge Co-Op has grown to become the largest single store, consumer-owned, natural food cooperative in the United States, according to organicconsumers.com and you can just imagine how prosperous this co-op will continue to be now that it as acquired its very own farm! Indeed, The Wedge hopes to continue purchasing produce from other farms and to “continue working in cooperation” with the existing accounts of Gardens of Eagen. See what you can do about checking out this co-op and possibly becoming a member for yourself - it seems like only good things are happening!
